Cetacean Tour

Costa Rica’s South Pacific… one of the best places for whale and dolphin sighting. Certain characteristics make Osa Peninsula a place where whales come to mate and have their offspring, and later travel back to both hemispheres in the Pacific Ocean, depending of the season.

Our company has very wide experience in diving in the area and our trips to Caño Island have enjoyed whale sightings.

In an ordinary tour, we leave very early in the morning from the town called Sierpe, where we catch a boat through the wonderful Sierpe River, which is one of the most extensive in Central America. A very large variety of bird species live in its mangrove swamp, as well as aquatic fauna, specially reptiles, such as American crocodiles (Cocodrilos Acutus), four species of monkeys, including the rare Titi monkey, and snakes such as the Green Arboreal Boa.

After leaving behind the Sierpe River mouth, we would be able to watch one of the most wonderful landscapes of the country: Violines Island, Drake Bay and the shore of Osa Peninsula.

Once in open sea, we’ll start looking for the five species of dolphins, sea turtles and whales.

Usually we leave at 7 am, and enjoy lunch at Caño Island, approximately at noon. Then we can snorkel for two hours, and then start looking again for whales on our way back to shore, getting back to the hotel around 3 p.m.

The best time to visit Costa Rica’s Pacific Ocean are October and November, however, you can see cetaceous almost all year round. Some of the most abundant species are: fake Orcas, Hunchback whale and Pilot whale. Among dolphin species there are five that exist in the area, including the most popular, the “Bottle Nose” dolphin and the “Turn-around” dolphin, which makes very funny pirouettes in the air.

The South Pacific awaits you…
